Behind the Headlines 02.09.10

Gukurahundi artist Owen Maseko on BTH
Bulawayo based artist Owen Maseko was arrested in March and spent 4 days in police custody after an exhibition of his paintings opened depicting the Gukurahundi era and decades of oppression under Mugabe’s regime. This week the Home Affairs Ministry and the Censorship Board banned his artwork describing it as a ‘tribal based event’. Maseko has now been charged with insulting Mugabe. He joins Lance Guma to talk about the entire saga.

Behind the Headlines 26.08.10

Tererai talks to Jenni Williams, one of the leaders of the pressure group Women of Zimbabwe Arise. She talks about the 30-day deadline that the 3 principles to the GPA were given, to implement outstanding issues in the GPA. Williams said what is needed is the political will and desire to do what was agreed, but the MDC is not helping as they are not putting any pressure on ZANU PF.

Guest presenter Tererai talks to Simbarashe Moyo, chairperson of the Combined Harare Residents Association, about the extravagant salaries being paid to top executives at Harare’s City Council. Moyo said it is unbelievable that some of them earn $15,000 a month, when the whole city is serviced by only one ambulance and many areas go without water.

Nelson Chamisa on Behind the Headlines

Ahead of a SADC summit expected to tackle the crisis in Zimbabwe Lance speaks to MDC-T spokesman, Nelson Chamisa, about what they hope to get from the meeting in Namibia. Chamisa also responds to criticism that some in the MDC have become ‘more focused on politics as a ‘profession’ or a ‘station with perks’ rather than focusing on good governance and transforming the country’s policies. With traditional allies in the ZCTU having a dig at the MDC, Chamisa told the programme ‘friendly fire is good for democracy.’

In 2006 NCA activist Nixon Nyikadzino was bundled into a truck by soldiers led by a Major Kembo. They struck him on the head and eyes using clenched fists while one of them took a burning cigarette and burnt his body. His abductors also started pulling out his dreadlocks, resulting in a lot of bleeding. He fled to South Africa and spent nearly 4 years in exile but last month Nyikadzino took a job back in Zimbabwe. He speaks to Lance Guma about his return, the political environment and the coalition government.

On Behind the Headlines we have part 2 of the interview between Lance Guma and exiled Zimbabwean cricketer Henry Olonga. In 2003 Olonga and team mate Andy Flower wore black arm bands in a cricket World Cup match, to protest the death of democracy under Mugabe’s regime. Henry talks about that decision and also about the controversy that always surrounds mixing sport with politics, a topic discussed in full in his newly released autobiography, Blood Sweat and Treason.

New co-Home Affairs Minister Theresa Makone was in the spotlight last week after allegedly conniving with Presidential Affairs Minister Didymus Mutasa to intimidate police officers into releasing his son Martin Mutasa. Martin was arrested alongside ZANU PF activist Themba Mliswa and George Marere after trying to seize shareholding worth US$1 million in a company owned by white businessman Paul Westwood. Following reports that cabinet has sanctioned the sale of diamonds worth an estimated US$1,7 billion BTH looks at why human rights activists are insistent these are ‘conflict diamonds’ and should not be given a clean bill of health. Mavhinga also looks at the challenges facing the Kimberly Process certification scheme, the corrupt awarding of mining tenders and the forced eviction of villagers living near the diamond fields.

She is part of the facilitation team appointed to mediate in the endless power sharing dispute in Zimbabwe.
